Esquisse d’un portrait d’Alexander Balanescu, violoniste virtuose, Caprices est également une interrogation sur la manière de filmer la musique et sur la manière dont la nature d’une même musique se modifie selon les conditions de sa réception.

Music film with an extraordinary structure. The film is a sketch of Alexander Balanescu, the virtuoso violonist and former member of the famous Arditti Quartet. It is not a real documentary : the film is made on the basis of a scenario written in advance and Balanescu in fact plays a role. He keeps playing the same piece, Sei Cappricci, a piece for solo violin by the italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino . The piece is used as concert music, film music, rehearsal music and as background music. The film does not only provide a portrait of a great musician, but also poses questions about the way in which music is usually filmed and the way in which music changes according to the circumstances in which it is heard.
